yep, Chris has returned to England. I really missed him, so I'm pretty happy he's going to be coming to stay at the end of the week. Yay!

In other news, we went to a party on Saturday. It was fancy dress (theme - villains), and after deciding what to go as on FRIDAY NIGHT, I spent all day on Saturday helping Rich make his costume. Still, he looked pretty fucking awesome.
Here he is:

The cloak was entirely hand-made by me, the armour was made by Rich, with ties sewn on by me. I think he had the second best costume there (Denzil, whose party it was, dressed as the Predator, which obviously trumps everything)

ok, so

firstly, my hand is fine. I'm preeeetty sure I haven't got any nerve damage (apparently a possibility. eek) and I can grip again. Nightmares aside, I feel fine. So that's good. I don't think I'll be making similar mistakes again any time soon!

Secondly, our cat is fine! Yes, we've decided to become the proud owners of the gorgeous tabby. He had a test for feline leukemia and FIV (cat version of HIV) and he's nice and healthy. So yay! Now we're hunting for a name for him. Current options include: Euclid, Casimir, Lorentz and Archimedes. yes. we're going geeky! hehe. Any ideas gratefully accepted!

House continues. Will do proper house update sometime. Don't know when.

1. Reply to this post and I'll assign you a letter.
2. List (and upload, if you feel like it) 5 songs that start with that letter.
3. Post them to your journal with these instructions.

I got C from [personal profile] long_roadtoruin, so here we go...

1. Cat's eyes - A.C.T
Absurdly upbeat, very catchy. Woo yay.

2. Carrot juice is murder - The Arrogant Worms
Just look at the title! It's a song about killing people who kill vegetables

3. country House - Blur
The first song I ever loved on my own. Great escape was the first album I ever bought. This started it for me.

4. Creeping Death - Metallica
Hell yeah

5. Chasing the Dragon - Dream Evil
It's just a very silly song. But it's hard not to love.

Here we have an extract from a totally genuine chemistry paper
(if you're interested its reference is: chem, commun., 2007, 1733-1735)

Later on we get a BiNT as well.

In their defence, it's written by a team of Chinese chemists, so they probably don't realise it's rude. We had a good giggle in the office though.

so I grew up in the town where burglaries are *least* likely, and now I live in the city where they're *most* likely.

Heh.

I'm sure I have this in common with many of you, but BLOODY HELL I HATE COLD-CALLERS!

gah.

Simply enquiring about bike insurance does not mean I want to be called by AXA PPP blood healthcare. Fuck off!

I always tick (or untick) all the boxes to say I don't want to be called. Why are they calling me? I know the woman on the end of the phone is just doing her job, but I can't help but want to yell at them.

*is pissed off*

1 minute of my life wasted. I know it's not much, but if I'm going to waste time, I like it to be on MY terms.

In other news... many many congratulations to Casper (and the rest of Hot Magenta)!!!!!!!

I had 2 more teeth pulled on Monday. Wasn't nearly as traumatic this time (mostly because I had emotional support from the Rich). However, to make up for the lack of trauma, I've got more pain. Figures. I also now have a cold. So in general I'm in a pretty grotty mood. I fear for the first years whose coursework I now have to mark. I'm not feeling terribly generous.

You may have noticed a change in my journal style. The lovely [profile] paranoid_blonde has offered to make me a new theme! She's still tweaking though, and I'm (obviously) going to play with it for a bit, so for now, I have a temporary boring theme.

I expect you'll all be waiting with baited breath for a while now. Mwa ha ha.

My physics was in the news a few weeks ago:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/7190107.stm
(sorry, can't get links to work)

many people spotted this as it's about dark material. Woo. Not exactly my subject, but I do study buckminsterfullerene, and it's always nice when that gets printed (not least becaue it's a cool word). I study vibrations (kinda) in buckminsterfullerene. Though really it's just silly quantum mechanics and group theory.

Anyway, today, Rich's physics is in the news:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/7215972.stm

He's trying to find a working theory for quantum gravity. It's pretty tricky.

Odd isn't it, that we're both considered news, in a very short space of time.

In other news, we're getting pet rats in a couple of weeks! Woo! They've been born, we just need to decide which ones we want. Aren't they cute?!

ooh, and we installed our oven! so our house finally works properly. Huzzah!

Tagged by , [profile] pearbean and thought I'd give it a go for a change

A. List seven habits/quirks/facts about yourself.
B. Tag seven people to do the same.
C. Do not tag the person who tagged you or say that you tag "whoever wants to do it."

1. I don't like wearing shoes indoors, or for a prolonged period in general. This is to the point that I'll take off my shoes when I'm driving, at the cinema or on a plane. I do leave my shoes on when on a train as trains are just gross.

2. I find it very hard to sit with both feet on the floor. I almost invariably fold one up under the other.

3. I'm allergic to Christmas trees (boring stereotypical cheap ones). They bring me out in a rash.

4. I'm ridiculously jumpy. Very small things will make me jump out of my skin, like my phone ringing, or someone knocking on the door. Hopping out from behind a tree and going "boo" makes my heart pound. Oddly, I love scary films despite (or maybe because of?) this fact.

5. I have a bad habit of beating up people I share a bed with. Usually by elbowing them in the face.

6. I have something of a hair fetish and have had way more long haired partners than short. Conversely, I love having short hair myself, though it hasn't been that way since 6th form.

7. I hate anybody touching my ears, feet or armpits.

To follow through, I shall tag: [profile] casparrrrgh,
[personal profile] neojezebel
[profile] paranoid_blonde

well, that was a bastard, but it seems to work now...

Some people have complained that we haven't updated our house blog, well, ever. So here's a slideshow of our kitchen from the beginning of July till yesterday. There was a huge break in work on it when we did the bathroom. Hence why it took so long.

slideshow! )

I'm just glad that for the first time in 6 months I was able to make coffee for myself in the kitchen using a proper tap!

Cooker goes in tonight. Yay!

A review of 2007....

1. What did you do in 2007 that you'd never done before?

So many things... Drove to Germany, Put up plasterboard, plumbing, destroyed a lot of house, laid concrete (seeing a theme?).

2. Did you keep your New Years' resolutions and will you make more for next year?
My standard resolution to do more exercise was good until September, when I injured myself. Not too bad I think.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Not very close to me, no. My sister became a godmother though.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
Yes. Rich's father died in March.

5. What countries did you visit?
Germany, with fleeting visit to France, Belgium and the Netherlands. This year is looking much better for travel!

6. What would you like to have in 2008 that you lacked in 2007?
Progress on my PhD. And a kitchen sink!

7. What date from 2007 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
16th March was when Peter died. 28th June was when we finished buying our house. Both pretty massive events.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Damn, again with the house... fitting a bathroom's gotta be right up there. Seriously, if you want to feel you've acheived stuff, buy a house and do some DIY!

9. What was your biggest failure?
hm. probably actually failing to stay upright when hiking and thus buggering my leg for 4 months and not being able to go to Dream Theater!

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
See above! Nothing else though, which is impressive considering the number of power tools I've been using!

11. What was the best thing you bought?
The house! and a bathroom suite off ebay, definitely the best decision ever!

12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?
Tough one. I'd say my brother for the first half of the year when he managed to pull himself together enough to get  a decent 2:1 on his degree after 3 years of slacking somewhat.

13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?
Masses of people in the media and politics. And the staff at Royal Berkshire hospital for not looking after Rich's dad properly.

14. Where did most of your money go?
Lol. Take a wild guess :p

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
In order: Chris' college ball, my 2 year anniversary with Rich, buying a house, going to wacken, making a bathroom look lovely, starting to make a kitchen look lovely and generally other things like that. (it's 2008 and we haven't finished yet!)

16. What song will always remind you of 2007?
serpent's kiss - Symphony x. Or at least the first 10 seconds.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i) Happier or sadder? About the same
ii) Thinner or fatter? Fatter
iii) Richer or poorer? Tough one. Technically richer, but have £45,000 more debt!

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Physics

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Procrastinating (heh)

20. How will you be spending Christmas?
Probably with my parents again.

21. Did you fall in love in 2007?
I've been in love all the way through!

23. How many one-night stands?
None.

24. What was your favourite TV program?
House, Numb3rs and CSI

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
I don't hate anyone. I dislike a couple of people a bit more.

26. What was the best book you read?
Another tough one. I obtained a copy of "...and then there were none" with the original title of "ten little niggers" (no prizes for guessing why it's not called that anymore!) by Agatha Christie, and I have to say it's the best crime novel I've ever read, not just for 2007!

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Ziltoid. Thanks Craig!

28. What did you want and get?
My own house to play with, a nice cutlerly set and not one, but 2 le creuset casserole dishes! Damn, I'm middle aged....

29. What did you want and not get?
A romantic gift from my boyfriend :-(

30. What was your favourite film of this year?
Hot Fuzz

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I ran around Wacken shouting "es ist meine geburtstag!", drank a full bottle of mead, ate pork with random german people and missed several  bands. I was 24.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
see q 29.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2007?
dodgy shorts covered in a combination of silicon sealant, tile adhesive, grout and plasterboard jointing compound, none of which seem to wash off...

34. What kept you sane?
nothing. I'm not.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
eh?

36. What political issue stirred you the most?
The rape case in Saudi which was in the news a lot. Plus the Burmese stuff.

37. Who did you miss?
All my friends who I haven't seen enough! Mostly I miss Liz, who's been in Japan for far too long!

38. Who was the best new person you met?
I've made lots of good friends in the department (took until the start of 2007 to actually speak to them much!). Can't really single any one person out.

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2007:
When removing kitchen units, keep hold of the bit with the sink until you're ready to put in the new one. Not sure this really counts as a life lesson, but it's certainly valuable.

Your Score: The Cat

You scored 67% domestic, 33% gregarious, 14% trickster, and 64% intellect!

Yo!

In other news, our kitchen floor is now level and we're going to tile it tomorrow; my hip hurts, but not as badly as before; I've bought a mooncup, which is awesome (womb-bearers go look! http://www.mooncup.co.uk/ ); research is annoying; and I've knitted a jumper! Busy me ^_^

And finally, here's a couple of excellent (amusing) news stories:

text message I received today:

"C&G_PLC

We are pleased to confirm that your formal mortgage offer will be sent to you by post over the next few days."

the list of things that can go horribly wrong is shrinking....

P.S. for those of you who don't know / haven't worked it out: Rich and I are buying a house.

Expect a massive party some time in September when we're done fitting kitchens/bathrooms/radiators/fuse box/flooring/everything else except double glazing and a boiler *le sigh*

Apparently done as an April Fool's.
pie_are_square: (Default)
Most of you have already had this done by Yolly, but it looks quite sweet, so I thought I'd have a go. May make me actually update this thing :s

Post a reply and I'll...

1) tell you why I friended you.
2) associate you with a song/movie.
3) tell a random fact about you.
4) tell a first memory about you.
5) associate you with an animal/fruit.
6) ask something I've always wanted to know about you.
pie_are_square: (Default)
Finally, I've managed something I've wanted to do for most of my life, possibly not *all* of it, but certainly a lot.

Yes, I now own a big black, fluffy dressing gown!

wooooooooo!

In other news, I'm typing up lecture notes for a 3rd year physics student who's bline. They can print these notes in braille! technology never ceases to amaze me. Can't say computer's are bad if they allow blind kids to do physics.

I also have some real research to do, which is proving difficult. I'm basically going through a paper that my supervisor has refereed and saying why I think they're wrong. How exciting. This isn't my final thesis type aim, but it's a step towards it.

I want the snow to melt so I can get on my bike. I've got the bike itch. It's bad. I also want my scottoiler to arrive, so I can fit it and have shiny lubed chain all the time. mmmmm.

Final exciting news is that replica x are supporting a.c.t in March in Rotherham. Very exciting! I found out before Rich too, which was odd.

Apologies for brevity. At least it's an update :p
