I had 2 wisdom teeth out yesterday! Huzzah for no sore teeth, but boo for new sore face.

The boring story:

all 4 of my wisdom teeth are impacted. The top 2 grow into my cheeks, the bottom 2 were growing sideways, pointing towards my other teeth. These were the problem bastards. food got stuck, the gums got irritated, it took me an age to clean them and general blah.

So, In september I went to the dentist and he said that he'd refer me to the hospital. Only 2 years after I stared to have problems *sigh*. November saw me being prodded at the maxilofacial unit in the hospital and last Friday I got a letter from the treatment centre.

Actually, the letter came at 2pm on Friday the 12th, and told me I was going to have an assessment at, wait for it, 12pm on Friday the 12th. Yay for NHS efficiency. I called and they did it on the phone, but I was rather pissed off.

so yesterday I went to the shiny treatment centre at queen's medical centre. for you warwick types, it's designed just like the learning grid. Spacious and shiny. It doesn't look like a hospital at all. I suppose it's meant to be relaxing, but I thought it was quite weird.

I was shown to my cubicle, told to remove all my body jewellery (including nipple bars. That was rather tricky. those things haven't been unscrewed for 4 years!) and I put on my back opening hospital gown and my comfy dressing gown and slippers from home. I had no bed, just a reclining chair, but it was comfy and I could knit.

then I got asked lots and lots of boring questions, with repetitions in case I got it wrong first time: "are you allergic to anything?" "are you on any medication" - why do I have to answer these 4 times? "no" "yes" there. *gah*. I met the anaesthetist, who was very nice and said he'd give me stuff to stop me vomiting (as I did the last time i had general anaesthetic), and i met the surgeon who was also very nice and told me that the risk of permanently numb lips was less than 0.1% (there's a nerve that runs under the roots of back wisdom teeth. it can get damaged by the extraction). so that was good news.

Then, 2 and a half hours after I arrived I was walked right into the Operating Theatre. No anaesthetic room for me, oh no. I lay on the table and 4 people bustled about me, sticking probes to me, fiddling with the bed, fitting the blood pressure monitor, putting a needle in my hand, spraying local anaesthetic up my nose (which tasted horrible) and generally making me feel quite set upon. Then the anaesthetist gave me the anti-vom stuff, and then the anaesthetic, which kinda hurt a bit (my veins are really rubbish and don't like things going in or coming out of them).

Next thing I remember was waking up, feeling very very cold and being unable to get my feet under the inadequate blanket they'd given me because I couldn't move my legs. A nice nurse added another blanket and tucked me in, and gradually I regained consciousness. After about half an hour of the oxygen mask and feeling very squiffy, I was wheeled back to my chair, where I was given squash and a yoghurt (the first things I'd eaten all day!). I was offered jelly, but I'm a healthy girl! Oh yes.

I got my nipple piercings back in and got dressed to wait for Richard, who drove me home and then fussed over me. Lovely boy that he is.

The painkillers I'd been given for the op wore off at about 10pm and BLOODY HELL! But I've been given codeine, which is nommy. So i'm kinda coping. You know it's bad pain when 2 codeine tablets, ibuprofen *and* paracetamol all at once isn't quite enough to stop it hurting. It's not surprising though. the way my teeth were meant that they had to cut my gum, remove some of my jaw bone to get to the teeth, then break up the teeth so they could get them out. No way those babies were coming out in one go! My face is puffed up like a hamster.

Now i'm sitting in bed, rambling (blame the drugs) and crocheting a truncated icosahedron to give to my supervisor. I expect I'll be here all day.

Schmeh.

TL;DR - I had 2 wisdom teeth out and now my face hurts.

*squish back* thanks!

The truncated icosahedron is actually a useful thing. We've all had paper models up until now, but they get badly damaged, so I figured crochet would stand up to the wear and tear necessary when working out rotations and distortions of buckminsterfullerene ^_^

I'm not *just* a geek :D

well, the teeth are gone and that's all I really wanted.

My lips aren't numb now either, so I think I'm ok there too.

You brave thing! Get well soon.

Just thinking about the anesthetic process makes me start to panic (I woke up when under general anesthetic when I was a kid having an absess removed).

Hope your mouth recovers well enough to eat christmas food!

Rich is on campus at the moment, so no fussing right now. But I've had a shower and got back into bed, so I feel much more pleasant.
